Mountain Tea is owned-and-operated by the Chen family and was founded in 1977 as a small tea shop in Taipei, Taiwan. Here they mastered brewing, tasting, and serving the perfect cup of tea. No longer satisfied with just serving great tea, they sought to grow great tea. So, in 1987 they planted their first tea bushes in the heart of Taiwan’s tea growing region near the WuShe mountains in Nantou, Taiwan at an elevation 1,500m (4,921ft). Since then, Mountain Tea has expanded to Sumatra, Indonesia and Fujian, China, planting high elevation gardens in both.
Volcanic Tea.
In 1991, the Chen family planted their Indonesia tea garden (under the direction of Chen Mao Sheng) in the Kepahiang Regency of South Sumatra to take advantage of the mineral-rich volcanic soils. Tea is able to be harvested year-round from this fertile region.
South Sumatra is a province of Indonesia, located towards the southeast end of the island. It is relatively large, stretching from the northeast coast inland, almost the whole way to the southwest coast, with the Barisan Mountains creating a narrow strip along the coastline that is the Bengkulu province to the Southwest. Tea is grown close to this border in the highland areas near Mount Dempo, the highest stratovolcano on the island. In 2006, they founded their third garden in China’s most famous tea producing region: Fujian, China in the LongYan mountains also at an elevation of 1,500m (4,921ft).
